I am getting a Syrian hamster and need to know some things...
like- how do u clean its cage?
wat r the best ways to design the layout?
How do you no when your hamster is ill?How do you wash the Syrian hamster(its body)?
you dont need to wash your hamster - it is more likely to get ill if you do.
You will notice a big change in your hamsters behaviou when it gets ill so you will know. Be aware of the symptoms of wet tail as this is a common killer.
Cleaning Your Hamster's Cage:
Take apart the cage- mainly the sleeping compartments.
Remove all the dirty sawdust and bedding thoroughly by pouring it into an old plastic bag.
Then you will need to disinfect the cage using a special pet disinfectant from a pet shop.
Wipe it off using some paper towels or kitchen roll.
Cover the floors of the cage with a layer of wood shavings-sawdust can get into your hamster's eyes %26amp; cause health problems.
In the sleeping area(s) add a few handfuls of small pet bedding. This should be made from paper or cloth-cotton wool type material can kill your hamster.
Clean %26amp; re-fill the food bowls and water bottle.
Put the cage back together and make sure it is safe %26amp; secure. How do you wash the Syrian hamster(its body)?
A hamster should never be washed. Hamsters keep themselves clean and wash themselves regularly. Never bath your hamster, as it can catch a cold.
the cage can be cleans by disinfecting it at least once a week, you can clean the 'potty area' every day.
an ill hamster will be weak, and in a hunched position, you will notice it since it will not be active as usual.
1. to wash the hamster just wipe it over with a rung out flannel if its dirty. and apart from that it dosen't need washing.
2. if you get a cage with a detachble base get the base and empty it all into a carrier bag. you might want to save some of the nesting material though. empty the whole cage every week or so and the litterbox daily. scub the cage clean once a month.
3. food and water one corner, nest box (search hamster igloo on google) middle because the hamster will move it then a little hamster toilet in the diagonal corner from the food.
4. when they are not eating are lethargic, its obvioyus lol.
but a book. http://www.pethamsters.co.uk/index.html
Just throw the shaving or bedding what ever type you use in a plastic bag. Then since hamsters usually pee/poo in the same place, it get stuck to the base. I bought a sponge I use ONLY for my hamsters cage and would scrub it with some soap (no disinfectant or bleach!) Then dry it and fill it halfway with bedding. I put mine in a roll arouond ball when I clean their cage, they love it!
You will want to change the lay out at least once a month so they don't get bored. I usually keep the wheel at the back or one of the sides, I don't like it in the front because I can't see my little buddy! Then i put my house on the opposite side.
If it has hair loss, bleeding out of 'areas', limping, just not being it's self.
And for washing the hamsters body, you don't need to unless there is a sticky subtance on his fur, just wipe with a cloth. Do NOT use chinchilla sand they can inhale it and cause a infection! They have sand baths for hamsters at stores although syrian hamsters don't really use them so don't waste that 10 bucks!
how do you wash a hamster cage?
tip all the hamsters old bedding and old food etc. then get some spray that you but from pet stores spray the base (bottom) of the cage with that then get a damp cloth and wipe over, then dry it with a towel or some kicthen towel. do not use soap and water and only use Special disinfectant from the pet store example http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-鈥?/a> clean the cage out once a week.
Trust me ive been doing this for 4 hamsters for a number of years.
whats the best way to design the layout?
what ever is best for the cage
how do you no when your hamster is ill?
well they don't eat much, they don't drink, they get slow, they don't move much.
i would recommend buying a book like this http://www.petsathome.com/find/keyword-i鈥?/a>
so you can get the most info out of that and you can detect an illness before its too late.
good luck with your new syrian hamster if you would like some more help with hamsters then please feel free to e-mail me i will get back to you asap.

Firstly - never put a hamster in water, it stresses them out, and stress is the main cause of wet tail. use a dust bath with chinchilla sand.
To clean the cage - remove the hamster and put it in a safe place. remove all of the bedding and litter, and take the cage to the bathroom. Get a cloth and soak it in vinegar, wipe all of the toys and the cage base and bars down with it. Then rinse the vinegar off of the toys and cage, and dry the cage. Put clean bedding and litter in the cage, and replace the toys. give fresh food and water. replace the hamster.
Layout - the hamster will choose. But here are some tips. put the food and water close together, and away from the litter tray. the wheel should have nothing stopping it from going around and the bed, wherever the hamster chooses.
To tell if the hamster is ill - it will sneeze/cough. its eyes will be puffy, it will have diorohia. if it had diorohia, get it to a vet ASAP.
any other questions, email me - killing_time_forever@yahoo.com
